(C13-19) Slide 105: Human ovary, 3-1/2 mos. of pregnancy (Groat's).

Slide 105 is an example of a human ovary from a pregnant woman. The major structure on this slide is the corpus luteum of pregnancy (C13 cl). The granulosa lutein and paralutein cells show well (C14 and C15 gl & pl).

· Q8 How does the corpus luteum of pregnancy survive beyond the time of its expected demise at day 28 of the menstrual cycle? (You may not be able to answer this question the first time you work through this lab. If you don't know, wait until after Lecture 35 and then try again.)

The interstitial glands (C16-C17) are also a prominent feature of the ovary during pregnancy, as a result of follicular development without ovulation (and therefore atresia). There are several interstitial glands on this slide (C16 ig). Note the radiating rows of cells (C17) which are so characteristic of these glands, and the green-staining glassy membrane that is derived from the basement membrane of the follicle. Scanning your slide further, you should easily be able to find a very large corpus albicans (C19 ca). Look around the slide some more to find other smaller corpora albicantia.
