Hair cells in the crista ampullaris (in the base of each semicircular canal) sense movement of the head. The cupula (remnants seen as pink layer over crista) bends hair cell stereocilia with movement of endolymph in the canal. The collapse of the canal "ceiling" is a common artifact of fixation.
